I have a f40 and need to know about the Transmission fluid. I assume it take 80-90W gear oil. Is that a correct assumption? And here is a link to a picture of the fill cap. http://www.tractordata.com/photos/F001/1086/1086-td3t1.jpg but how would I check the level there is no dip stick. I assume you pull a bolt out of the side of the transmission and fill until it comes out that bolt hole. But can any of you describe which bolt that is? I have a service manual on order from amazon but it is still a week out and you guys probably already know this. I love this forum it is so full of good info.

I think your F40 is typical of the Fergusons and uses GL-1 mineral oil or it's equivalent NOT GEAR OIL!

I believe it has a common sump for the tranny, the rear axle, and hydraulics. NAPA carries GL-1 oils. You can also use UTF(Universal Tractor Fluid) There should be a side access plate on the right hand side and the fill cap is on the transmision cover. You remove the bottom bolt on access cover and when the fluid runs out the bottom hole you have the proper level. It takes some time to fill all three compartments so put about 90% of the stated fill capacity in then let it sit for a for hours and check the level. then add the final ammount.

Thanks for the tip. I found the inspection cover and come to find out there is a dip stick right in the middle of it. It just doesn't look like a dip stick. The loop for your finger to pull it is broken off or something. But it still works.

I read something about removing some screws?
