2015 John Deere 5115M, 1928 and 1945 hand start John Deere D's,
In the 2 days(new to us) I've had our howse mower on the pto I forgot how to get it off. I can't find the book. I remember I have to twist the front, but don't remember which direction and it seems to be jammed. I pulled the mower off to do some other stuff and the pto still won't release. Is there a safety button or something? Thanks

Brent

Brent...see the collar from the shaft that is on your tractor's PTO....from the picture it looks like your kind is the kind that you push or pull the collar...pull back on the collar that is on your tractor's PTO shaft and work it back and forth..it will slide back...and then post back if that does not work...The other type has a button but I don't see a button to push...let us know..

most 3pt implements i have, the PTO shaft stays attached to the implement. and i just disconnect the shaft right on back of the tractor.

normally the end of the PTO shaft that connects to the implement. has some sort of bolt that locks the PTO shaft to the implement. then the end of PTO shaft that connects to back of tractor. has some sort of "push button" right on the end. then pto shaft just pulls off of back of tractor.

some times i have had to take a hammer to tap the push button lock, and then some times raise the 3pt implement. turn off tractor, and then while push down on the push bottom wiggle everything around. some times using a large size long screw driver like a pry bar. to get the PTO shaft to slip off.

looking at picture, i am going to assume instead of a push button. you need to turn that end 1/4th turn or something like that. and then just pull on the shaft for it to come loose.

with things being new. make sure you get the PTO shaft greased up along with everything else. so you do not destroy things quickly.

cross posted with brin, it very well could be a push or pull back vs twist.

I had one like that on my Howse bushhog, it twists a quarter turn to unlock. I left it hooked up a long time once and the ball bearings inside the collar rusted up and wouldnt release. It took a lot of penetrating oil and tapping with a hammer while twisting the collar lock back and forth to loosen it up. That is likely the same problem yo are having. Just have to get some PB Blaster or WD 40 into it an keep tapping on it while rolling it around and around to get the little ball bearing to drop back then you can slide it off. It is spring loaded to hold them in place so it should only move in one direction, twist it about 1/4 turn and hold it while tapping and pulling it toward the rear. Not an easy task but that is how you have to get it off.
Once off, clean up the balls and slather some grease up into the coupling so the balls dont rust up again.

My PTO that looks like that one requires a twist. I have another that has what looks like a big flat washer on the tractor end of the shaft (pull on the washer) and a third one that has a pin about 1/4" in diameter (push the pin).

Thanks guys I think Gary is on to it, but being brand new it doesn't feel stuck by rust or grease, it feels like the insides are jammed. However that being said, I gave it a good soak with WD40, if I can't get it tomorrow, will give the dealer a call or stop in to look closer at how it works/comes apart. I will update when I get it off.

Thanks
Brent

I had one similar to yours. It got stuck as well. The collar had a cam that would push the spring loaded pin to release the PTO. The plastic cam broke inside. I was able to remove the rear flange and push the pin inside to remove the PTO shaft. I then removed the collar and just push the pin to release the PTO shaft.
