I was wondering if anyone has any opinion or knowledge of haying leases. I have property in the Catskills, Worcester Twp located New York State the parcel has aprox. 40 acres of fields which has been hayed up to last year but I currently need to find a new person. I would like to understand the terms which go into a sharecropping lease for haying. I am looking to generate revenue from this venture but want to be fair and more importantly not ignorant. The hay is from an older planting and in my opinion it would most likely be used as bedding but again I could be wrong maybe feed also.

Any input would be appreciated.

Thank you..

Unless the people are desperate or you have a real different market in your area that type of ground really isn't worth much at all. I can have all the marginal hay ground I want here for free as the people are happy to have it cut and maintained for free. If all the hay is good for is bedding then it is a low cost item and I don't know of too many people who intentionally bale hay for bedding unless they have a personal use for it or own the ground it is on. Maybe someone else will have a different opinion but around here you would be lucky to even find someone who would want to bale that ground for free let alone pay or bale on shares. Best of luck to you.

Why would it only be good for bedding?

Any grass crop here cut in a timely fashion will make good hay

I wish I was closer I would cut and bale it on shares

That's part of my problem, I do not know what the quality is. It was getting cut and bailed but I do not have any details on number of bails etc.
