I have a MTD log splitter 27 ton same as the troy built, My wiper seal has started to leak a little. I cannot see how to take the cylinder apart. There are no slots or hole in the face that I can see and it is recessed in the cylinder preventing grabbing it's perimeter. Has anyone taken one apart or has knowlege as to how? The cost of a replacement is ridiculous $500 plus

Real easy cylinder. Post a pic of the cylinder end.

There is no need to replace whole ram just becuase its leaking. You just need to replace the rings/seals. Like wayne said, need pics of both ends.

I can't really tell from the pictures, as they are slightly out of focus, but there may be a large snap ring that fits in a groove in the inner circumference of the cylinder. Remove the snap ring using snapring pliers and the piston can be used to slowly push the cylinder cap out. Try not to push the piston out too as this may be difficult to reinsert without repalcing the seal on it.

Once the cap is out slide it off the end of the ram. You may want to remove any paint or rust on the end of the ram first. Then replace the seal in the cap and you may also want to replace the O ring around it's outer circumference.

Reverse the proceedure to reinstall.

Thank you I have discovered the snap ring and I must now find a pair of proper pliers. Thank you again

I got the ring off. I found that the only way was to use a piece of pvc pipe and rubber mallet to tap the ram nut back a little then the ring can be removed.

Well the splitter is back together and working. Total cost was 14.68 for new seals. it took a few little tricks to get things apart and back together but beat the $600 plus for a new cylinder that MTD wanted. Thanks to all for the information.
