Tiller Help with new used Long 1542 Tiller

Just picked up a used tiller down the road. All I can make out on it is it's a Long Model 1542 6' maybe 6'6"...here's my problem:
1) I don't know much about working on tillers!!
2) Tines turn fine, but as soon as they hit the ground they quit turning and make some ugly sounds.
3) Where to find a manual?


Any thoughts or guidance...I see each end has a screwed on cap with a shaft sticking out the middle. does this remove the left and right tine bar? If I have a sheared pin where do I look for it?

Update..I did pull the left side tines off, the shear key is fine. I can't get the right side off yet (left handed threads right??) I looked at the ring gear..looks a bit rough...am I headed for a disaster finding these parts?

Does it have a slip clutch that isn't tight?

i am having the same problem with my ford105A tiller in that if i try to till deeply it don't work...at least in my case it works fine at less than deeply tilling. it makes a terrible grinding sound when i try to till deeply.

When my Long tiller was less than a year old, I had exact same problem.

Dealer found gears in gearbox had worn/stripped. It was only the third time the unit was used. Tiller would run fine until a load was placed on it, then grinding noise.

As the unit was rated for a minimum of 40hp and my tractor was is 39hp, he concluded that it must has been "soft gears" that let the tips of the gear teeth wear off.

did you replace the gearbox? was it expensive?

Was under warrenty. Dealer replaced gears inside gearbox.

So did a new set of gears help it? I would hate to put a new ring gear in it, just to have it ground apart again.

Have been using it for several years with no other troubles. I assume if you open the gearbox you will find pieces, if that is your problem.

I took the back cover off and round that the ring gear is fairly chewed up, though no teeth are broken off.

...i'm still struggling to get the shaft off the right side tines..so until I get it off, I won't be fixing anything!!!
