Well I got the tractor all put back together except hood. I replaced gas tank, all gaskets, filters, etc. New plugs, adjusted valves, replaced oiler grommet in the valve train, new radiator, hoses, cleaned and fixed up water pump, new thermostat, new radiator shroud (which made me replace a very worn pivot pin, main axel, and gave me a good excuse to remove and replace an axle support bracket bolt), new bushings and spindles and thrust bearings on the front. (I found out the hard way those bushings need to be reamed....good way to meet the nice guys at the local machine shop). I had previously had starter rebuilt, replaced wires, plugs, points, and condenser. Also replaced a worn belt. I just rewired the whole thing.
When I ran it, it sounded great, but with a little sputtering now and then....I had yet to do the carb as I wanted to rewire the tractor with new, but wanted to make sure it ran ok, before I did that. Every once in a while, I'd hear a squeak squeak squeak near the front end. Feared it was water pump or alternator, so I took belt off and ran tractor. Still a squeak. I did notice that when it squeaked was only when there was a stutter. It did not increase with rpm but was "occasional" and it correlated with the surge.
Prayed carb cleaner in the throttle body hoping that would help. with the surge,...I would get puffs of black then it would run clean with an occasional sputter, the squeak still correlated with sputter. I messed with adjustment jets and it seemed to have little effect on engine. This evening after I finished the re-wire, cold engine, the rpm was unstable and wanted to die a bit. I took governor linkage off to see if there was a problem with the governor, and the rpm went all over the place.
I did check my very careful wiring job and checked the spark at the plugs...good...ohms across register and old coil (3.6) just in case my wiring affected something.
Took apart the carb and it was dirty of course and now will order a kit.
My main question is this: if, after the carb rebuild, the engine still surges a little and a squeak is present...is this a governor issue? If it doesn't surge, but squeaks with a change in rpm.....can I put this off for a bit until I tear down next year for paint? I put a screw driver in the place where I figured the front engine bearing would be and sounded pretty smooth...also figured If it was a main engine bearing, I'd hear more noise and it would correlate with rpm...like I said...squeak only happens when the rpm changes and governor shaft is moving.
I've heard you all talk about the balls and race on the governor. I imagine it is a simple fix. Do I need to take the whole front end off to get to governor, (including the axle support bracket, or can I do it with just the radiator removed? What pieces do you have to remove to work on governor, and is there a simple fix for this if the governor bearings and race need to be replaced?
