I have a tilt bed trailer and want to mount a storage box on the tongue frame.

I purchased the box from tractor supply this one.

It is not a taper tongue box it is square. Was wondering which the best way to mount it. Having the lid open facing the back toward the trailer or have it open toward the front. Obliviously if I mount with the lid open toward the trailer and I forgot to close it the wind when I would blow it shut. The problem with this mounting option is that is a little more awkward to load stuff in and out of the box. So I am thinking of mounting it with the lid opening facing the front toward my hitch/truck. My concern is that if I do this and forget to close the lid I would hut the box.

Obliviously the tapered boxes would be prone to this as well but I think their is less surface area for the wind to push on.

Sorry to take so many words to ask such a simple question. Any and help in thinking this out would be great.

Thanks

Most of the tongue boxes I've seen that are specifically made for the application, are hinged at the rear and have some type of cable or gas strut that would keep the lid from blowing open past the 90 degree point.

I would mount it so that it is hinged at the rear and just remember to close it. Maybe install a cable on it so it can't blow open too far if it doesn't already have one.

I agree, just close it. You should always do one final walk around when you are pulling a load and check the tires, straps, tool boxes, ect.

I have a box on the tongue of my trailer. It is one of the ones made to go on the side of a pickup bed. Probably 6 foot x 1 foot.

It opens towards the front of the trailer. The latch has never worked, but it has never blown open or leaked.

I bought a similar box from Tractor Supply for my tilt trailer. I welded up a 1/4" angle frame to support the box. My box goes up with the trailer when it tilts and contains my hydraulic pump, winch, and battery. Mine opens from the front and has been on there for almost 4 years now and has never opened up while traveling.
You can easily mount your box to the tongue of your trailer by welding or bolting two pieces of angle across the tongue to bolt the box to. You'll probably have to relocate the spare tire. I made a bracket for mine and put it on the side of the trailer.
