Hi I'm new to the forum and was wondering if anyone was a guru that could give me advice on installing a new drive belt?
I replaced the mower drive belt on my Ferris which wasn't an issue (I had the OEM book to show the routing) but I had to unhook the tensioning pulley spring to route the belt. Upon trying to hook up the spring again, even with then tensioning rod fully loosened, I jus didn't have the strength. Luckily my truck was parked at just the right angle to allow me to use a strap on the front hooks of the Z71 to attach a ratchet strap. I attached the other hook to the spring and tightened it up tight which then allowed me to hold the spring/ hook with one hand while using my body to push down on the strap to pull the spring enough to get it into the retaining hook. Then it was just a matter of loosening off the strap and removing the strap hook from the retainer hook. It was much easier the next time when it jumped off due to not enough tension (the new belt stretched in a bit and I didn't adjust it in time) and only took me a few minutes to rig up and get the belt back on. I still had to get the book out again to route the belt right.

So my advice is get out your manual to route the belt correctly between all the pulleys, fully loosen off all the tensioners and maybe have a partner to hold the belt onto the engine main pulley, mine kept falling off as I was trying to route it thru the mower pulleys but I finally managed it by myself. Have an alternate stretching mechanism to pull on the tension spring. I found it much easier to remove the spring than to try to pull the belt onto the last pulley with the tensioner in place even when the adjustment bolt was as loose as it would go.

First make sure you know how to route the belt.

Get everything routed, but leave the belt off of the easiest pulley to get to, THAT is STILL in reach of the tensioner. Have the belt ALREADY ON the tensioner pulley. Then loosen the tension with the lever or whatever, and slip the belt over whatever pulley you deemed easiest to get to.

Too many times I see people have the belt on all the pulleys and try for the tensioner last. The tensioner pulley is usually in a harder to get to spot, and the fact that it moves makes it more difficult.

Go for an easy pulley last. Then you only have to worry about the tension lever.
