I have a Yanmar 3110d that has the old style seals in knuckle. There is lots of info on the new style but I can稚 find much on the old style. There are 2 seals that are suppose to go on. When I pulled it apart I only found 1 seal.
Do both seals go inside the front lower gear box (#2)?
Or point me in the correct way I am suppose to put these back together...any help is appreciated!
The seals in the diagram are 10 and 11.

It’s been a while but I think I had the old style in my JD 950. They both go inside the lower housing. Be sure to keep track of all shims and reassemble as removed. I also had to install a sleeve on the knuckle shaft. I didn’t like the Hoye sleeve as it was thick enough that the hole in the housing would require enlarging. I wasn’t about to cobble up the housing with a die grinder and I don’t have a mill.

This is the sleeve I used. Worked perfect and did not require enlarging the hole in the lower gear housing.

Awesome! Thanks for the info. I will pull the one back apart and put the second seal in.
The spindle is actually in really good shape and doesn稚 seem to need a sleeve. I guess I will know tho if it leaks that maybe I do.

Someone sometime ago added a bunch of grease zerks to the drain bolts instead of replacing the seals, any ideas on getting the grease out they pumped in or just add the oil and run it?

Also, should I be concerned that there were no shims in there when I pulled it apart?

So they pumped the gear boxes full of grease? You have to fully disassemble the hubs to change the seals so it would seem you have already cleaned the grease while doing the first seal. Maybe I am not understanding.

I am guessing the shims were there but were stuck to the housing cover and you did not notice them. If there are really no shims then yes I would be concerned. The shims locate the gears and establish the correct backlash. If they are not spaced correctly I would expect a noisy gear set at best and abnormal gear wear at worst.

Here are some of the shims.

Yes that is correct. They pumped everything full of grease. They put bolts with zerks anywhere the drain bolts are. The area where I replaced the seals wasnt really too full and is clean now. The portion of the gear box that the rim bolts onto can pulled apart. Maybe I should do that to clean the grease. I just donthave those seals.

There were no shims. I was aware of them and was looking for them. Also tried to clean the surface that bolts up. I havnt driven the tractor a lot yet but havnt noticed an loud grinding noise or anything.
Ill have to read into the shims more and try to find out how many should be there or how to figure that out.

Wow, that sealing surface is ugly! The sleeve is thin enough that you will use the same seal. You will need to make some sort of driver but even pvc will work. Don’t feel too bad, I spent the evening pulling the transmission out of my 2017 Silverado with only 115K miles. It’s always something!

Got the sleeve ordered today from a local bearing company. Ordered the bearings from for the hub from hoye. The sealing surface almost looks like there was a sleeve put on it once before. The bad looking spot is raised slightly. Just above it measures 60mm. Makes me think the raised part is a sleeve. I’ll see how it cleans up when the parts get here.

Thanks for the info, helped out greatly.
Good luck on the transmission! I’ve been babying my failing clutch in my Mini Cooper for most the summer.....got another winter project ahead of me!
