Here is what my 1700 sounds like. Let me know if it sounds normal. This is started in 55 - 60 deg temp tonight.

Sounds normal to me.

I've been experimenting with biodiesel and writing about it elsewhere. Google for:
You thought I was exaggerating about that rod-knock-like clanking
if you are interested to read about my experiences.

Here's a vid of a cold start I referenced in that thread: Cold start vid posted.
That was 100% biodiesel, no additives, 51 degrees, first start that day of a cold engine. It was real reluctant to start on 100% biodiesel. I finally found the right combination of throttle position and plenty of Thermostart to get it going. It clanks like yours after it finally fires off.

My next step in the biodiesel experiment was to add Power Service at half-strength (3 Cetane point boost) which helped it start a little easier. I'm trying to find the point where it starts normally on biodiesel. (After the first start of the day there is no difference now).

In summary - I think your Yanmar sounds just like mine.

When I had a 220D Yanmar, the sound it made "improved" when I replaced the muffler/exhaust pipe. The guts were all rusted out an it was just a can at that point. BTW I just started up my JD 935 (3 cyl diesel) for the first time since last October. I had just put 3 new glow plugs in at that time. It cranked for 4 seconds and started right up. When the glow plugs were shot, it had a few spells of clanking at initial startup.

It is good to know I do not have a mechanical lemon.

Just a side note, The RS1400 tiller I purchased with the tractor is AWSOME!!!
