Oil & Fuel High Sulfur Fuel in 1026R

I recently stopped at an area truck stop and purchased off road diesel fuel. At the pump it was labeled high sulfur off road fuel. After getting back home and dumping the first 5 gal in my 1026R, I noticed a sticker saying use low sulfur fuel only.

Is it really an issue to run this fuel in the machine or is this notice for emissions only?

I am willing to bet the sticker is old. If you are worried about it call the fuel supplier and ask.

Ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel was proposed by EPA as a new standard for the sulfur content in on-road diesel fuel sold in the United States since October 15, 2006, except for rural Alaska who transferred in 2010. California has required it since September 1, 2006. This new regulation applies to all diesel fuel, diesel fuel additives and distillate fuels blended with diesel for on-road use, such as kerosene, however, it does not yet apply to railroad locomotives, marine, or off road uses. Since December 1, 2010, all highway diesel fuel have been ULSD. Non-road diesel fuel was required to move to 500 ppm sulfur in 2007, and further to ULSD in 2010. Railroad locomotive and marine diesel fuel also moved to 500 ppm sulfur in 2007, and will change to ULSD in 2012. There are exemptions for small refiners of non-road, locomotive and marine diesel fuel that allow for 500 ppm diesel to remain in the system until 2014. After December 1, 2014 all highway, non-road, locomotive and marine diesel fuel produced and imported will be ULSD.

I'm with DT86... probably old sticker. Don't think anyone produces anything other than USLD anymore.. All you got was USLD with the red dye in it... And, if the pump is rarely used, you probably got 'old' diesel with not as much snap in it as the higher use fresh stuff from the regular pumps.

Farm fuel is no longer high sulfur. It's all low sulfur, but the farm fuel is dyed and is not taxed.

Hi - I used to work in the petroleum industry....the responders above are correct. It is illegal to sell any diesel fuel except ULSD in the United States since 2010. The only difference is nonroad (off highway) diesel fuel is not taxed as high as onroad (on highway) diesel fuel for obvious reasons (road damage & repair costs), and is dyed to ensure highway trucks don't use it (inspection stations).

It is also correct that the previous nonroad diesel fuel was LSD from 2007 & 2010. This did two things - it provided more lubricity for fuel injection system wear parts & had higher energy content because the process to remove sulfur from fuel also inadvertently strips some of the higher energy longer chain hydrocarbons from the fuel. So you pay more for less energy. Good deal, eh? The reduction in sulfur reduces both particulate matter (soot) from combusion & the formation of sulfuric acid in the engine, so the engine oil does not have to have as high of a TBN.

Come to think of it, the pumps are very old which makes the old sticker very probable.

I feel much better. I was a little worried and was starting to convince myself it wasn't running as well. In retrospect, I'm sure it was just fine.

so the ULSD will shortening the life of the injector pump and the injectors from lack of lube would adding a quart of motor to a tank of diesel help when a logger ran out of diesel he used kero and added motor with it never hurt the Cummings at all
