My C174 is struggling to climb mild gradients and even on flat ground will not drive forward when put in HIGH range. It has a HydraStatic gearbox with just 3 ranges, High, Medium and Low. Even in Low range with the 4 in one loader and a carry all tray on the back but with no other load it cannot climb a very mild gradient that I feel it should be able to do.
Am I asking too much?
Thanks for any help!

Have you checked the trans fluid level and replaced the hydraulic filter?

The fluid level is fine but I have not checked the filter. Could a dirty filter cause this problem?

Yep.....If the fluid won't flow, your tractor won't go /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Have sent the tractor to the service workshop to check the filter and the gearbox oil.
Will see what happens. Thanks

The workshop tells me the head gasket was leaking and they are replacing it. They said this could cause the problem but I am sceptical.
The problem showed itself by not being able to climb mild gradients but the engine did not stall. The engine was revving fine it just seemed like the gearbox was slipping.
Any thoughts?
Thanks

I guess anything's possible. If the engine would't keep the RPM's up, the pump wouldn't be pumping to capacity and might cause the trans to slip. Let's just wait and see.

Thanks
I am sceptical because I do not believe the engine was losing any power it just appears that the drive starts to slip and eventually the tractor just stops moving forward but the engine is still running hard.
Sounds more gearbox related to me so the filter is a possibility. Also does anyone know what is the grade of oil that has to be used in the gearbox?

Thanks

DO you have any pictures of your tractor. I am a fan of the Hinomotos and have never seen a hydrostatic grey market. I wonder why you don't see more? Hinomoto built tractors for Massey and Allis Chalmers and those Hino built tractors were available with a hydrostatic transmission.

I think that there is also a transmission screen besides the pickup screen.
