I am trying to figure out for sure if the hydraulic pump on my son's E18 is failing. It shows the following symptoms:

The loader bucket and three point both raise up very slowly.
The loader bucket also jerks as it raises up.
When the loader bucket is lowered, the fluid level in the transmission increases sometimes so much that it comes out of the air vent at the top of transmission.
My son removed the hydraulic fluid suction pipe from the both the pump and where it bolts to the side of the transmission and he also removed the high pressure pipe from the pump to see if there was some sort of filter screen at any of the connection points and there wasn't.

It seems that the pump's suction side just can't keep up with the fluid pressure demands.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Pump must be flooded for the pump to work correctly.

If you do not have fluid at the pump inlet, there is something blocking the fluid, maybe a screen or a filter.

You may also have a suction air leak.

Thanks for your reply J.J.

We have looked for a screen and filter and so far have been unsuccessful in finding any.

There is no indication of any leaks.

We are guessing that the pump may be failing in such a way that even though the suction side is flooded, it is not pulling fluid in fast enough to keep up with the output pressure side. Is there any way to confirm this short of replacing the pump?

Yes. There is a flow and pressure test to determine the pumps health,

Can you take the tractor to a hyd shop or your dealer to test?

If you knew the pump flow specs, you could test the flow your self.

Well, fortunately, my son found a filter screen in the bottom left side of the transmission after he spoke on the phone with a guy that has some E18 background. He removed the screen and found it was almost completely clogged. He cleaned it and reinstalled it and we filled the transmission with new hydraulic fluid. The tractor and hydraulics are now working just fine. Thanks for your help J.J. You made us go back and keep looking for a filter or screen. I have attached a photo of the screen and one that shows where it mounts in the transmission. I hope this will help someone else down the road.

I have a similar problem with my Hinomoto C174 pump. The system has a spin on filter and I have searched all my manuals for similar Simplicity and Allis Chalmers model and can't find a screen anyplace. Does anyone know if the C174 has a second screen in the system? The pump just doesn't deliver enough pressure. I DID change the filter, spin on, and the pressure got a bit better. Wish I could find the screen. Any help greatly appreciated.

You may have a sump screen. It may look like a large bolt.

It could look like the one above.
