Hinomoto N209
 I have a serious problem. My Hinomoto N209 has only 24 hours on it. Guess it's since it was rebuilt. Had several problems which I fixed already. But now I have one that has a very experienced diesel mechanic scratch his head. He is a professional and it's NOT me. The tractor had been sitting in the shed for about 2 months during which time one of the hoses from the fuel tank to the filter had cracked just behind the clamp. Yes, the fuel filter is clean. In other words most of the fuel had leaked out. I had a small job to do which took less than 10 minutes and most of it at idle speed. On the way back it stalled about ten feet from the storage shed (garage) and there it sits today, blocking my drive way. Equipped with a front end loader and box scraper, both sitting on the ground.

I hired a mechanic and he has worked on it five hours already, but the tractor will not start. He replaced all fuel hoses and even replaced the OEM fuel pump with a new electric one. Now we have fuel all the way to the injectors (3 cylinder). He swears that he purged all lines up to the injectors of air. While cranking, the exhaust smokes dark grey to black and plenty of it. But, the thing will not fire. The mechanic is a truck engine type mainly and this little tractor has him stumped. All this just because the thing ran out of fuel. There must be something that prevents the engine from firing. But what??? Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. Before this the engine always fired after no more than two-three revolutions. BTW, on top of the engine it says: HINOMOTO DIRECT INJECTION.

While I'm here let me mention that I have been hunting for a parts/operators manual for a very long time. Any help there? If there is one available somewhere in the world I will be more than happy to pay for copying etc. The dealer told me "no problem getting parts and manuals". Bullcorn! In case you have never been to Arizona, I'm convinced there are more Edsels here than tractors. (Except for construction types). If you are a diesel mechanic, move here and you will be a very rare breed. Thanks, Guys.

Thanks and my location is S.E. Arizona.

I can supply you with a parts book. The N series tractors were never sold in the US so there are not English operator or service manuals & are some of the hardest tractors to get parts for. It looks like the only bleeder is the one the injector pump inlet line. The button should be depressed while pumping with the fuel pump.

Keep in mind that nothing actually "fires" in a diesel. The fuel/air mixture ignites from shear (but very high) compression being forced upon it. Black smoke indicates combustion but not necessarily in all cyclinders.

You might try loosening the lines at the injectors and cranking the engine to ensure all are getting fuel. But I suspect you've already done that.

Is there any chance water may have gotten into your fuel? I have a good friend who had severe starting problems until we find out rainwater was getting into his fuel barrel.

If not, my next step would be a compression check on all cylinders since it tells alot without the need to replace parts.

Sprngdrl is correct in his method of troubleshooting. My N239 is experiencing the same symtons. I loosened the injector lines but am not getting anything out but bubbles.

Next step is to check the fuel line for bubbles at points all the way back to the fuel tank. Assuming the tractor uses a gravity-fed fuel system (no fuel pump), you've got to locate where air is leaking into the line. Fuel should flow freely from gravity alone (with no bubbles) at any point you bleed from the inlet to the fuel injector pump back to the tank. I would suggest starting at the inlet to the pump.

The 209 has an electric fuel pump that you will be able to hear as soon as you turn the key.
