Thomas,

I have watched that show before. Not a job for the faint of heart. I liked the part where they drove the trucks across the ice cracks over the ramps, couldn't believe they would even attempt that, guess anything can be done by those that know what they are doing.

I watched part of that last night. great show!

Not something I'd like to do - crossing the frozen lake in an 18+ wheeler.

... "Now you've got do drive slow, eh, so you don't build up a pressure wave under the ice and make it blow out at the other end. 15MPH is max - oh don't worry about that cracking sound you hear, eh, it's just the ice stretching..."

No thank you. See the show if you haven't!

Thomas, watched the show too. There sure is a strange feeling one gets when driving on a frozen lake. Couldn't even begin to imagine being out on a lake in a 50 ton rig. I had to chuckle when the old fella said -40 wasn't bad, -50 was getting cold, and -60 was !@#$% cold. One tough dude./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I didn't see the show but I recall a canoe trip to upper Ontario years ago. The locals claimed there was a mine on the other side of the lake that was only accessible in the winter, over the ice. Never knew if that was true or not.

When I spent time during the winter on East Sebago,it seem 2 or 3 vechiles went thru the ice /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif while driving out to fish, hope those guys watch the show. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

The company that plow the lakes sure had some major plowing equipment. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I spent a wonderful 3 years in the Canadian high arctic, Thomas ... and the only real travel (there were 18 miles of road in and around town) was on ice roads in the winter. The Mackenzie froze to 20 feet or more of ice and therefore you could haul anything on it. Unfortunately, drive enough of the big stuff and those wonderful cracks start to get REAL big. I had lots of fun experiences ... especially making extra money by diving to attach winch ropes to the trucks and cats that went swimming.
My brother-in-law used to drive from saskatoon up to Uranium City in Saskatchewan every year after the winter freeze was set ... and on his fifth year he just about bought the farm ... without warning, the ice gave way crossing a lake and he went into 18 feet of water. Fortunately the truck was 17 feet high, he had the "moon roof" open for safety ... and there was a truck fairly close behind so he could warm up before the hypothermia set in.
It is/was indeed a dangerous job ...

too bad that common sense ain't
