Holding a gear to lock a shaft.

I need to remove a nut holding a gear on the end of a shaft. the shaft drives a small hydraulic pump. The gear is driven by a gearbox driven by the PTO on my tractor. The gear is about an inch long and 3/4 inch in diameter. The nut is 11/16. I will damage the gear if I grip it with vice grips, about the only way I know to hold it. I am grateful for any suggestions.

Get yourself a nut splitter and turn the bolt and the nut will split. A Dremel tool will also work. I have cut a 2 in steel collar off of a shaft.

I tried leather inside the vice grip jaws and it still slips. I don't have an impact wrench, but I will look for one later this week if it's not off sooner.

The nut is very thin. I don't where I would get a replacement for it.

I'd try a hard wood wedge(probably oak) between the driving and driven gears. If you don't have access to an impact wrench, use a breaker bar/socket and a 3lb hammer. One sharp rap and you should be able to turn it off

Can you drill a small hole in it and run a steel rod thru to pin against a housing?

How about a small adjustable spanner wrench to engage the gear teeth. The picture is of an old Armstrong spanner I bought from e-scam-bay for 10 bucks this summer.
