Does anyone have experience using pos hole digger on 1725 or similar size tractor? I want to dig 40+ holes for a pole barn. The holes need to be 4' deep and 18" diameter. I'm thinking this is almost certainly too much for any digger that will fit on my 1725, but who knows? I'd be interested to hear any comments, suggestions or advice.
Thanks

I've used a PHD on my TC29. I'm thinking your thinking is right. The deepest I've been able to go is about 3 feet. I think my auger is 12 in. Here is a link to a post I put up a while back on digging in hard groundhttp://www.tractorbynet.com/cgi-bin/compact/showflat.pl?Cat=&Board=nhown&Number=16640&page=6&view=collapsed&sb=5 Consider renting a good size skid loader, with attachments. A good rental outfit can advise you on just what you'll need. For the size and number of holes you need that is how I would go. I sometimes rent equipment from my New Holland dealer Alamo Ag-Con. Although they rent by the week, if I can be a little flexable, they will give me a daily rate. Just an Idea.

dennisf, I agree with ErnieB that renting the equipment for that job may be the most practical thing. But if you really want to do it yourself, you know you can buy "extensions" for some post hole diggers. Of course, when you make them longer, the 3-point won't pick them up high enough to clear the ground, so you dig the depth it will go, stop and put the extension on, with the auger in the ground, continue digging to that depth, then stop to remove the extension before pulling the auger all the way out, etc. Slow process.

ERNIEB & BIRD,
THANKS VERY MUCH...I APPRECIATE IT. NO POINT IN TRYING TO FORCE THE WRONG TOOL TO DO THE JOB: I WILL RENT A SKID STEER OR WHATEVER.

I don't know how expensive they are but... I have seen hydraulic units that clamp on to the bucket of a front end loader. These units can dig pretty deep with the right extensions. That is what was used to dig the holes for my pole building. The one they used was a pretty old unit but it dug pretty well & the tractor never groaned at all. You can lift them out of any hole providing your bucket goes high enough. I would try inquiring at your dealership to see if they can hook you up with this type of hole driller.
