I had gotten to like being able to place an order online, then pickup in the store an hour or so later. That way I knew the item was there, and when I'm in Mississippi it's a 2 hour roundtrip to the hardware store.

But lately I've been getting a lot of "junk". Gallon paint can obviously opened and feeling light. Toilet valve repair kits missing parts. Ladder with a bent rung.

Has this been happening to others?

Usually I can refuse the item, but sometimes it's the only one left.

So I'm wondering how frequent this is.

Don't know...

Did have a problem last week and left the store after being there for 1 hour...

Wrote a letter and the manager called to apologize and said my order is waiting for me and they were not charging me...

Now everyone knows me... so service should be outstanding or maybe not next time?

If I ordered something and it was damaged and they tried to pawn it on me, I would ask if they couldn't have a replacement drop shipped at my home address as compensation for my lost trip.
I don't live that far from Lowes (home depot is 60 Miles away) so no issues with calling for something. I am usually in town every week or so anyway.

I found that when I have a web order to be picked up they don't give the 10% off when using my Lowes card. I have to stand there while they credit the order then charge it again.

I sure would be wary of ordering lumber online for pickup. I imagine they will not give a rip about picking out good boards, and would just throw them on the pile without looking.

Last Xmas season I ordered some tools from Lowe's for store pickup at the same time the same items would also be available at the store. My thinking was that they would be sold out of store stock by the time I got there. Turned out they had plenty of the same items on the shelf and the pre-order was hurry up and wait while someone went and retrieved the item then run through extrainious paperwork. At least my items were new in box and not missing anything.

Come this season's specials, if I see something I think I cannot live without then I will head for the store. If sold out the I guess I will just have to prepare to meet my maker or perhaps just live without, lol!

I order 2.5 gal jugs of glysophate concentrate (generic Roundup) from HD for direct shipment to my house. I order two units so the total sale is over $45 to get free shipping. Can't beat that deal. Cheaper than the store price.
Right now I'm waiting for one of those 3-gallon Roundup spray units on wheels from HD to be delivered to my place. Sometime next week.
No complaints on this HD service, so far.

No complaints on this HD service, so far.

I've had excellent service with orders delivered, it just seems they pick out the shoddiest item on the shelf (items that obviously were damaged or returned) when I go for in-store pick up.

I could see an employee or manager doing this at a local store but not nation wide. It would be a "good" way to clear out returned items that the store might have to eat money wise. Short sided and dishonest to say the least.

When we built the house we did will call orders from HD but mainly from Lowes. The only problem we had was a special order for doors from HD. The doors were wood and when HD delivered the doors they stacked them on the front porch which was perfect. However, somewhere along the way a pallet jack/lift had been placed under the door to lift them. When the put the pallet jack/lift under the stack of doors they gouged the heck out of the bottom door. Pretty sure this was done by one of the employees that delivered the doors since the damaged door was placed so that it could not be seen until the other doors were installed in the house. Twas not amused to say the least. A call to the manager quickly had another door ordered but this took weeks to get delivered. In the mean time, the builder finished the damaged door and hung it so we could move into the house. HD had to finish the replacement door, remove the damaged door and hang the new one. The builder did such a good job on fixing the damaged door that your had to know it was damaged. We still have the damaged door in storage.

The damaged door was $800 but it cost them quite a bit more in fixing what should have been resolved right after it happened.
