Home made gas forge??

Hi all. I have heard around of designs for a home made gas forge using an old brake drum. Has anyone tried tried to build one or indeed succeeded????
Spent a lot of time around a real Blacksmiths forge in my childhood and would love to take it up as a hobby again.
Failing that does anyone have designs for a coal fired forge???????????

Most of the wheel forges are fueled with coal or charcoal. Generally the gas forges are more inclosed to retain/reflect heat. I have one I made from an old r134 canister with an electric blower, works great. I'd visit some of the bladesmithing sites for more design ideas.

this is my forge.

Lp forge you can now buy the ventri tubes and make bascially a large torch. Take a piece of large pipe and put ceramic kiln insulation inside of it and then you can direct the flames where you want. you can also search for back yard casting and you will find different metal melting devices.

The truck brake drum forges I have seen have been coal forges. The spindle hole has pipe welded to it and a blower is connected to the pipe. Usually they are on 3 legs. I haven't seen a brake drum forge fired by gas - doesn't mean they don't exist - I haven't seen everything lol

I am in the s l o w process of making a coal forge out of a big truck brake drum, 2in pipe for the air blast in the bottom of the forge and and old chanpion 400 blower. look at some blacksmith supply places on line. Cantor forge spelled wrong but close and the like. there are lots of clubs that are about smithing as well. check for one near you.

I just ordered a few seconds of soft fire brick off ebay, they were 99 cents a piece. I plan on redoing my two brick forge since the soft brick i can carve out in an hour.
