One of my friends aged 88 started doing strange things after he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
He was a widow and had one son who was very successful and lived on the opposite coast... he asked his son if he would ever move back to California or if he wanted the home... son said he would never return to California.
So... at 88 he stopped paying all insurance and stopped filing tax returns... plus other bills... he did keep on the water and lights...
It was not that he couldn't afford it... he just figured his days were numbered and the heck with it... he almost made it to 90.
Of course a claim for back taxes were made and paid when the house sold... it did not burn down... he also dropped his vehicle insurance and his registration was cancelled... he still kept driving his 72 Skylark...
Even said if they arrest him and put him in jail he would be ok with that because after a lifetime of paying in... they would have to see to it he got his medical care...
I only say this because sometimes common sense is thrown out the window... and faced with a year or two to live he no longer cared...
Rational people can become irrational...
