home owners insurance

One of my friends aged 88 started doing strange things after he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

He was a widow and had one son who was very successful and lived on the opposite coast... he asked his son if he would ever move back to California or if he wanted the home... son said he would never return to California.

So... at 88 he stopped paying all insurance and stopped filing tax returns... plus other bills... he did keep on the water and lights...

It was not that he couldn't afford it... he just figured his days were numbered and the heck with it... he almost made it to 90.

Of course a claim for back taxes were made and paid when the house sold... it did not burn down... he also dropped his vehicle insurance and his registration was cancelled... he still kept driving his 72 Skylark...

Even said if they arrest him and put him in jail he would be ok with that because after a lifetime of paying in... they would have to see to it he got his medical care...

I only say this because sometimes common sense is thrown out the window... and faced with a year or two to live he no longer cared...

Rational people can become irrational...

just a thought that crossed my mind. I sure would not want all new stuff for the reasons just mentioned. Sentimental value.

Took 2 years to restock my shop with the new stuff. Sentimentally it was a bummer. But how much worse would it have been if I didn't have insurance??? $91,000 in contents (tools, shop equipment, etc.).

Great story.

I consider myself rational. But I've always said if told when I was going to die I might not be a very nice person as that day drew near. :)

Richard, knowing you like I believe I do, I think you would still be a nice person. I think you would go with peace. Correct me if I am wrong.

Are you sure? I wonder as the day drew closer if you wouldn't be focusing /delighting in the things important to you, I definitely would be doing **** little that I didn't really want to!

Well Richard, I know you are a "bad" guy. I know you have been there and seen the elephant, but being a "bad" guy, and being a PITA are two different things.:)

I carry a $5000 deductible. Most HO insurance claims are below that amount, mostly water damage or theft, so you get a big break on premiums.
