HomeMade Garden Tractor Scoop

If your downhill work causes safety and control problems you may want to convert it to a rear bucket as mentioned above. I built one for my Wards garden tractor. Neck strain, constantly looking over my shoulder, proved its main disadvantage for me. But if your shuttle distance is far enough to to relax your neck in transit the rear scoop will certainly be safer downhill with a load.

Red dirt,

DOn't know if your still active, but I am curious about your disc brake setup on your rear bucket. I need to do similar for a logging winch I am planning up.

Consider rear wheel weights, even if you have to build your own, as they don't add to the weight suspended by the frame rails. Load your rear tires also!

shinnlinger,
I am still active but somewhat sporadically these days. What is it you want to know about the disc brake set up?

First I built an external band brake for the bucket by copying a Warn winch assembly on my '63 Power Wagon but it did not have enough holding power. I shopped the internet for a go cart disk brake and it worked much better. My bucket load was fairly balanced though; just a bit off center to allow gravity dumping, so my required holding power was not very great. A logging winch may need more holding power.

On the other hand I did a lot of log skidding with the Dodge and the Warn winch/band brake never let me down. Perhaps my geometry was a bit off or the friction material incorrect on my home made band brake for the bucket. Never the less the go cart disc brakes are pretty reasonable (about $60 for disc and caliper as I recall) and they are easily adaptable to a variety of applications.

THanks Red,

THe winch is made from a car axle, so I can probably use the stock discs, but the master cylinder is what has me thinking more than I want to. The go cart master may be the way to go as a source. I assume you can lock it like an E-brake for your dump?

Are the go cart cylinder's juice or cable actuated????
