seems like you did a pretty decent job. not sure how much $$$ you saved when you figure in the time envolved. But if you had fun , then it was worth it. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

You probably saved yourself a few $$. If I remember correctly the toothbar for my BX23 was around $400. You could have saved yourself some welding time though by searching around on Ebay - I have seen the same type of teeth that are typically used for toothbars for sale there for use in making up your own toothbar.

That is one nice looking tooth bar. And I am glad to see that at least one other person has a BX that looks like it used rather than a waxed up thing in the garage.

Ahhmen, jimbrown!!! ... about both the nice homebrewed toothbar and the "working" machine.
Cheers!

Mike,

Nice work.

I pride myself as being a reasonably good welder, but I just don't have the time to fabricate from scratch a toothbar for the price Markham can deliver one to me. I purchased a Markham toothbar and I am not sorry, in fact, I am impressed by the quality of their product. But it looks like you have done at least a comparable job!.

Again, NICE WORK!!!

Looks real useful and certainly is a unique tooth design! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

On my bucket I have grab hooks on the outside and a slip hook in the center. I find I like the grab hooks better than the slip hook, as I can wrap a chain around something and just slip a link in the grab hook and not have to worry about hooking the chain back on itself.

Same with the center slip hook, pass the chain through it and then over and put a link in a grab hook on my side of the bucket and let the excess hang into the bucket.

Nothing wrong with what you have. Just an observation on how useful I have found grab hooks to be with chain... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Nice job Mike. I kinda made mine as I bought the teeth and the bar from Binkley and Hurst in PA, then paid a friend $50 to weld it all together. Overall mine cost~$200 including the shipping of the pieces so I saved about $100 at the time. Plus we had a good time putting it together.

Now if I only had a welder myself /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Thanks guys for all the kind comments. It takes some time to put those web pages together and I some times wonder if it's worth it, but all the nice replies you guys have given me tells me it IS worth it.

I gave the toothbar a good workout tonight, moving some piles of dirt around, and leveling off some high spots in my yard. WOW! What a difference a toothbar makes!! It used to take a lot of force to push the bucket into the hard ground, but now I find myself digging out more than I wanted to! Practice...

Hi Mike
What were the lengths of the stepped 1" Bars?
Would you please send me or share with all a sketch with dimensions.
You did a great Job and have inspired me to copy your design. Being copied is a great form of flattery.
Much appreciated.

Mike hasn't been around for quite some time. Your best bet would be to send him a PM.

Several years back I worked a project for Deere Heavy Equipment Div. which consisted of bucket teeth and shanks. The teeth were attached to the shanks with tapered pins for quick replacement. The shanks were bolted to the buckets. The teeth were all different configurations for digging different materials.I do have a customer that manufactures steel castings and am asking you good people for your input. My local dealer wants around $400.00 for a toothbar that does not appear to be as good as the one pictured (hats of to the builder).I can have castings in a couple of weeks,do you all think it is worth persuing?

I just built a tooth bar for my tractor. It is bolted to the bucket sides.
I used 23 series shank and teeth that I bought at the local John Deere industrial dealer. The shank look like this shank.jpgand the teeth like this.tooth.jpg
I welded the shanks on a 3/8 by 4 inch flat bar. The teeth fit on the shank and are held in place by a special dowel pin. Took me approximately 3 hours to cut steel, drill holes, weld and paint.

I will post some pictures of the finished product when back home

bucket teeth look great. I will be planning on doing this in the near future. Only the 2 bolts are good enough for holding in place.

The shanks are a tight fit over the cutting edge and take all the load. Put the bolt at the front of the slot and you can pull the bar off the edge and hinge it up and back if you need it out of the way for say , quick snow removal.

This guy on Ebay as shanks and teeth Search for "Bucket teeth"
eBay: Bucket Teeth CASE John Deere backhoe Caterpillar Qty 1 (item 220059411720 end time Dec-19-06 12:32:35 PST)
Wait till he has a 6 pack for sale the shipping was only $8.10 when I bought mine. He had shanks for $9ea in a 6 pack. Series 23 is the size.
