I have a extra beat up bucket for my tractor and would like some advice on the placement of 2 hooks . I was planning on welding them on the top were the " Level " bracket is one on each outside edge , but a friend suggest welding them to the inside of the bucket .

Opinions ?

thanks

Three on the top of my JD's bucket; one in the center and two on the edges. I'm not going out to the barn to take a picture though.

None on my Kubota yet, it's still under warranty and I don't want to give Kubota any excuse if the FEL has any problems.

I have two of the "clip on" hooks along the top edge from BXpanded.

I also attached a hook on the bottom, back edge of the bucket. Having it closer to the tractor increases its lifting capacity. I drilled a hole through the thick bracket that the bucket's hydraulic cylinder attaches to, and then used 3 or 4 links of logging chain, and a 1/2 inch grade 8 bolt to mount the hook. (Shamelessly copied another TBN'er.)

I don't think that you have that large bracket, as I believe you've got two bucket cylinders. If you can figure out a way to mount a single hook somewhere, do it, even if it's not as far back as mine. It makes lifting things much easier, and more centrally balanced. Having two further apart is good when you need to balance something, but it takes more messing around trying to get the lift squared up.

I frenched in a 2" hitch receiver on the top of my bucket, allowing me to use more than just a hook.

Here is what I did and I am quite happy with the arrangement. Most of the time I loop the chain over the large slip hook in the center and attach it to one of the grab hooks.
BTW I reinforced the top edge of the bucket with 2" X 3/8" angle.

I welded a 2" hitch receiver in the center, on top of my bucket, with a chain hook welded to the top of that. Absolutely love that setup.

Thanks for the replies . I have decided to weld to hooks on either end and a 3/4 shackle in the center . I like the receiver hitch idea  .

I will post some photos when complete

Be extra careful lifting anything from those hooks on the outer edges. Anything the slightest bit heavy will lift the opposite rear wheel off of the ground.

Thanks for the tip . The out side hooks will only be used together not individually . I added the shackle in the center for single picks .

thanks

The best way to mount a chain hook is to not directly weld the chain hook on the bucket or where ever your'e wanting to mount a chain hook. I use 1/2 inch hooks and weld them in place where ever I want them in a different fashion. Go and get some 3/4 inch cold roll round stock, put it in your vise and heat it red hot until you can bend it into a "U" shape with each end of the "U" being about 4 to 5 inches long. Now take that "U" shaped piece of 3/4inch round stock and slip a 1/2" chain hook into it and weld that "U" shaped baby where ever you want to. I have them welded on in this fashion on virtually ever thing I own and operate, back hoe, track loader, lawn tractor, four wheeler and my F-250 front and back. By doing it this way it allows the chain hook to swivle and adjust to the angle of pull. I did break one chain hook on my track loader with the chain hooks welded on in this fashion but I'll tell you that when it broke it was in a **** of a bind.

Reinforcing the bucket for hooks when mounting them to the top edge of the bucket is important

I have a BX24. Not wanting to spend the money on the BXpanded removable hooks for the FEL, I used u-bolts from 3/8ths cable clamps, through a small reinforcing plate of flat aluminum stock, secured with nuts on either side of the sandwiched metal. A 3/8ths inch chain clevis hook hangs on the outside of the bucket from the mounted u-bolt, allowing for some rotation with the load.

I mounted one at the upper rear corner on each side of the bucket, and use them a lot to lift items, pull roots, etc. With a chain on each, I've carried logs leveled underneath the bucket. That upper part of the bucket never hits anything I'm digging into, so they're fine on the outsides there.

One the outside of the backhoe scoop there's an existing unused hole. I ran a piece of thin winch cable through, hung a 3/8ths clevis from that, then secured it with a cable clamp. It has held up through a lot of heavy lifting. Photos show what I did.

Square tubing stock works well to reinforce the top lip of the bucket .. .just weld it into the channel. . . Also I have to agree with the earlier post that lifting off one side of the bucket isnt the best idea. Esp if you're not the only one who uses the tractor, IMO its safer to just put one in the middle. I welded a grab hook in the center and have managed to lift all kinds of bizarre things, never felt a need for one elsewhere. Better to spend the extra time and $ rigging a bumper to protect your lights and grille. . . .you'll need it!

I've never tried That, but can't see any advantage in having them inside. Sometimes the extra leverage of being able to rotate the bucket with chains over the top is nice.

Might as well have a few extra hooks. These are all from the junkyard; taken off of old 4x4 pickups.

I had my hooks lined up with the lift arms. Seems like that would be the strongest arrangement without worrying about bending the bucket or putting undue stress on things.
