Several years ago there was a small owl nesting in a hollow tree down the driveway. I finally looked him up on the internet and he was a screech owl. Its the only one I've ever seen and he has not come back.
Our normal owls are Great Horned and Barn. The Great Horned are big but the Barn Owls are big enough to eat the Great Horned for breakfast. I always take a strong flash light when the dog(cocker spaniel) & I go out at night so he can do his business. Many years ago, when I still had a few barn cats, I saw a Barn Owl sitting in one of my pine trees with one of my cats. They were not playing peek-a-boo.
At night you can hear the owls hoot - across the lake as they are sitting in the big pine trees. I think they like that particular location because their hooting will echo around the rock walls on the lake. Its a rather erie sound - as I stand out on the front porch - in the pitch black.
