Is there a thread on here that compares horizontal-shaft vs. vertical-shaft motors? I've noticed some older tractors (incl Wheel Horse) with horizontal-shaft motors, and it sure looks like belt access is convenient for these, though it's possible that's just based on the belts that are easy to see.

Is this another "it depends" situation, or are there real benefits to one vs. the other?

Generally horizontal shaft engines are built tougher and vertical shaft engines are better on gasoline.

Durability factors could depend on how they are spec'd out and equipment design in relation to cooling as well. Horizontal engines on a garden tractor are done many times so they can run a drive shaft back to the transmission. They do create interesting ways to drive a mower deck when used in this configuration. That being said, many horizontals that the shaft drove out the side rather than the rear. One would think that accessory drive comes into play.
