I had a tractor of similar age to that one. I am wondering if it was a worn locking pawl on the handbrake? The hand brake holds long enough for you to get off and lets go as you do so. The investigation results will be interesting..

Geared tractor, no seat belt just screams danger. With any cutter attached, I would never voluntarily get down without stopping the PTO. Just awful.
