Horsepower of a Massey Ferguson 240??

I just bought a mid 1980's Massey 240. In researching these models, I see various horsepower ratings, varying from 34 to 42.
I know they made this model for many years, and it seems horsepower increased during that period. Does anyone know about the history of this model? I also see in one old brochure that there was a 231 and a 240 offered, but they shared the same engine and almost identical specs, except the 240 had more horsepower. How do these compare? Anyone with a knowledge of 240 model, please tell me about its history. I wonder what horsepower mine has. I assume it is in the low 40's.

Massey also had a 230, a 235, a 245 and a 250 all with the same engine, maybe others as well. I assume the difference was fuel, maybe gearing but it does seem odd to have so many HP ranges in basically the same tractor. But why not monkey with success, they were great tractors. There was a 231S, but I believe that one had a different engine.
