Well, the cub is back from the dealer who replaced the melted hood / latch with a new one at no charge. I also asked them to look it over for the heat/ oil consumption issue. They could find nothing wrong and theorize that the excess oil consumption was caused by the hot operating temperature due to exhaust gas being trapped under the hood by the slowing distorting hood. At first glance I don't see any difference in the latch or how it is attached so time will tell. I had it out this afternoon and cut about 3 acres ..... It's operating cooler and had no detectable oil loss. But then the temp was only about 75 today.

All's well that ends ....... I'll keep an open mind!

Out of curiosity, did you ask about the recall and the additional heat shield that CCinCT mentioned in the other thread? If they haven't changed anything and just replaced some parts, I fear the same thing happening again.

Anyway, glad it's better now. Hopefully it'll stay OK...

I'd be a bit disturbed that nothing was changed, the melted parts were just replaced. You have to wonder if nothing was changed what's going to prevent the problem from happening again...

I just looked at the Cub parts list online and it shows an exhaust heat shield Part # 703-05875C. The C on the end of the number leads me to believe the part has been revised at least twice. And, the shield in the diagram appears to be longer in the front than the one that was on my tractor. There's also a clutch heat shield Part # 703-05883 that I don't believe my tractor has. I can't remember and can't look since it's not here.

Any chance you can post a pic of the exhaust and heat shield setup on yours so we can compare? CCinCT says he has the latest setup and if we can get him to also post a pic we can be more sure what we have is the latest thing and is going to work long term...

I noticed that the sides of it appear to extend further in the diagram than on my tractor.

There are many things that you could do to keep the heat away from vital engine parts, exhaust warps, heat shield blankets, glass tape for wires, duct tape, external elec fan, heat sleave for gas lines, longer filter, but most important is getting outside cooler air in, and Hot Air out of engine. On my 2185 with kolher coke oven I removed the headlights so that the hoT air moves out quickly and no chance of recruitlation of the same hot air.

I couldn't agree more. That's been my complaint in these assorted melting hood threads. While there's plenty of air moving under the hood, it's not really flowing in any way thats close to optimum. Obviously it's not done well enough to keep the hood from melting or the oil temp from being high.

All the heat shields Cub wants to add this week + exhaust wrap + more cooling air + whatever else we can come up with is probably the right answer. Also known as finishing the engineering that the folks in Ohio didn't bother with... ;)

Kohler Coke oven... :D
