I HAVE A YM1700 THAT RUNS HOT WHEN I PULL A 42" BUSH HOG .I HAVE TRIED THE MANY FIXES I HAVE SEEN POSTED,BUT NO SUCCESS.I WOULD LIKE TO PUT A WATER PUMP ON AND WAS TOLD THAT A PUMP FROM A YM2000 WOULD BOLT RIGHT ON.IS THIS TRUE?DOES ANYONE KNOW WHERE I COULD GET ONE ? WHAT ABOUT COST ? WILL I HAVE TO DO ANYTHING TO THE THERMOSIPHON SYSTEM IF I PUT ON A PUMP? ANY ADVICE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Welcome to TBN!
Might start first by posing your question to a new TBN sponsor, Hoye Tractor.l They might be able to get you the exact part you need rather than attempt any kind of substitution.

I think he has talked to me already. Those tractors don't have a history of overheating. Check, with a thermometer, to be sure it is really getting too hot and it is not just a bad temp sender. Clean out the radiator ( you need to be able to see daylight through all of the little fins of the radiator). Check your fan belt. If it is bubbling a bunch of water out of the radiator (there will be a small amount that is collected in the overflow bottle as the tractor warms up) and it is not actually overheating- it could be a head gasket or cracked head.

If all else fails, you might just have to take the tractor out of road gear when the grass gets too tall. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Heres what I always look for first before I rebuild the radiator.
I blow out the radiator fins with an air hose front & back
put a light in the front & see if you can see thru the cooling fins.
I put the correct mixture of antifreeze, then I run the tractor until warm & feel for cold spots on the front of the fins.
If all this passes the test I go to the water pump in your case (none)
I will run a pressure test next
Then I rebuild the core, its around 100. to have done
that usually does it.

I forgot about the coolant mixture. That is a big one! And to answer your original question- I dont see any reason why you can't put a pump on it if you wanted to. You shouldn't need to though. The 2000 and 1700 use the same exact head. You would just need a pump and new hoses.

Aaron. You think maybe a cold start in the morning and look for exhaust bubbles? Maybe?

My 1500D manual said run distilled water only!! during the warmer months. A premix of antifreeze and distilled water fo 30/70 was all that was reccommende for our temps here in Northern Mississippi. I have ben running all summer on just distilled water after installing temp gages and I don't get above 225 degrees. That manual I got from Aaron at Hoye.

I have a YM1700 and experienced the same problem. I had the radiator cleaned at a radiator shop, installed a new radiator cap (13 psi), and put in a mixture 30% antifreeze. However, it would still overheat if I worked it too hard. By "overheat" and "worked too hard", I mean a temperature of > 235-240F and mowing in high grass/weeds at full throttle in 7th gear. Rather than use a lower gear or reduce engine RPMs, I installed a water pump from a YM2000. And yes, it bolts right up. I got the parts that I needed from ARTEC in Alabama (I think) for about $100.

The temp now runs 140-160F unless I work it REALLY hard, in which case the temp goes up to approximately 180-190F.

I have a 1700 and the first thing I did was get rid of the idot lights. Those things are like electricity; I don't trust things I can't see! I installed gauges for temp, oil, and charge and I keep an eye on them while using the tractor. It does not get as hot here in NC, but last weekend while mowing with a 5' finish mower for a couple of hours and the temperature around 85, mine never got over 215. I would try installing gauges first (my .02).
