Wayy to many.
Hi to all, I am in the begining stages go building myself a new hot rod lawn mower an have some questions. I have a 21.5 briggs and stratton vertical shaft engine. Now my question in that if I were to take the engine shaft and weld it directly to the shaft of the hydro tranny would it work correctly? In theory it would but not compleatly sure. Next one: The mower I am building up is an old mid 70's craftsman rear engine rider. It has the 3 speed chain driven tranny. I would love to keep the chain driven system, and watched a video on youtube that says you can make some sort of manuel clutch for this which would be ideal, but I am just not sure.I would like ti go this route of possible.Mabie someone could point me in the right direction. Thanks

SOUNDS LIKE YOU NEED TO LOOK UP JAKE BREAK....A LOT OF MIGET DIRT TRACK CARS USE THEM

I would never hook a shaft to a shaft with direct fastener whether it be welded or bolted. The likelyhood of getting them perfectly aligned is NIL and within a short period of time, the bearings will be toast on one or both sides of the connections. Use a flexible coupling to join them.

Is this some kind of transmission system?

Thank you this is a great idea if I decide to go this route. My other problem with this way is im going to have a heck of a time trying to find a way to mount the engine above the transaxle.

Just a little off your topic, but.........there was a fella near me that took an older Cub Cadet, and installed a 4 cylinder Subaru engine in it. I have no idea what happened with his project.

See Eventually I want to do likewise with another old rer, With an old motorcycle engine. It already has the clutch and tranny.I would love to do It with this one, but once you have that kind of power, you would need a tube chassis. And I want it to still be practical. I think Im leaning toward the hydrostatic idea, and just attaching the belt tentioner clutch, and mounting It up the same as original tue only diffrenct being the belt length.

Yeah, what he said. It will never work as you have described.
