Hot water has sulfur smell

I have the same problem. I spoke to the guys at the water department and they said it was stagnant water. I don't use enough hot water to keep it fresh in the tank. They suggested draining the tank and filling it with vinegar and flushing it out through my lines. I did this, but didn't see any improvement. I swaped out water heaters and in a little while, had the same problem again.

I never thought about turning up the temperature and will try that today. Some days it smells worse then others. Today is one of those days!!!!

Water Heater Flushing.

Most water heaters have those JUNK plastic drain valves.
Kinda hard to get a good flush / drain with them.
I recommend first turning the thermostat to VACATION and
then turn on a hot water tap till water runs tepid so
as not to burn you. Shut down water, close all taps.
You gotta be quick, no matter be READY for a LOT of water
if you can not get the brass nipple started.
Remove old
.Then get a 3/4' x 3" long brass nipple
and a 3/4" IPS FULL PORT BallValve, remove the old plastic
junk and screw in the new using T-Tape and Dope. Then add a 3/4"MIP X MaleHose
Thread adaptor screwing it into the valve. No you have
a full port ball vavle to flush and drain with and you can
connect a water hose to it (if necessary). When you are
done remove the hose and screw on a FEMALE HOSE CAP
so no kid can turn it on and scald themselves.


Those whom have removed Anode Rods and gone w/o have been
lucky.

EVERYONE should turn there water to to full blast high at least
twice a year to combat Legionair's and Kill the creepie crawlies
in there ,IMO.

A 30 year old water heater? When it dies open it up and
look at whats inside...some are ok, the majority have 3-4"
of YUCK / debris in the bottom, and your water interacts
w/ that yuck then you shower with it and many folks
use hot water at the tap when cooking. Once you see
what can lurk, out of sight and out of mind in the bottom
of your water heater you will run every ten years max to replace it.

This is ANOTHER way folks can constantly stay sick! They do not
know what it wrong w/ them...it can be the YUCK in the bottom
of an old, never gets hot enough to kill bacteria water heater.

Another good way is idiots who set toilets w/o dapping and sealing
them 100% to the floor, bodily fluids get under the toilet, fester and grow,
and folks wonder why their always sick.

Remove the magnesium anode rod and replace with an aluminum or zinc anode rod.

OR
Replace the water heater with a plastic lined water heater, or an instantaneous water heater, or a commercial stainless steel water heater (none of which have anode rods).

What's causing a sulfur smell in my hot water? What's weird is that in the main house, it's not an issue. However, in my in-law apartment across the driveway, it's terrible. The water comes from the same well, but each building has it's own hot water heater. The hot water heater in the main house is propane, the one in the in-law apartment is electric.

Is it a temperature related issue? I haven't measured the temp at the faucet, but I can.

How do I fix it? I took a shower out in the apartment and it was really strong.

One has to wonder why you were showering at your mother in laws..........
