How big a disc mower?

OK - I have narrowed down to the Krone disc mower. They seem to have a very good reputation. They aren't cheap, but not that much more than the others and my dealer sells them, etc.

So, the next question is how big. I am debating between the AM 283 S and the AM 323 S . 9'2" or 10'6"

I have a John Deere 5525 that is 75hp PTO. 55 and 68 hp are what the mowers require - so I am covered there.

I am going to use a KMC Disc Mower Caddy. If I go with the larger mower - does it need the extra weight option? My dealer is saying no. It looks like the
Any experience with the KMC and the Krone? I see the 3 series requires something special.

I'd go with the 10'6" mower since you're going to use a caddy and weight won't be a factor for the tractor. A disc mower is a great tool but in some cases it won't cut as even as a sickle bar. The sickle bar will flex and follow the contour of the pasture where the disc mower cutterbar is solid and will not flex. A longer disc mower cutterbar will amplify the effect. Not a big deal unless you want the pasture to look like a golf course after cutting. You can angle the cutterbar so the blades cut closer but I don't like to scalp the pasture. It also wears out the blades faster.

I would think you could go with the 10' 6" model. My only concern would be the height but if you have a good place to store it and it will fit the sign the papers and post some pics as we don't see very many disc mowers up this way. In fact the only few I have seen were new machines on the dealers lots. I have never seen one here in a field being used yet.

I will have a dic mower early next year. I am going to wait until closer to the season - a used one might come up in the mean while. I have a rake and a baler lined up - only need the cutter.

My place is pretty flat, so I don't think it will be too big an issue.

I don't like golf anyway.

Call Ted Thomas at 615-898-8801 (Rutherford Farmers COOP) He sells both the KMC caddy and Krone disc mowers. He has sold each of the them for 8 years .
