How did I live so long without a slip clutch?

Is it like an inline slip clutch that you put on the tractor and then the pto shaft of the mower goes on to it? Have you got a picture of it, I would be interested in trying to find one here in the UK. I know what you mean about shear bolts too, I am always getting more of them (the baler has a real appetite for them) I think they must be taken by the 'shear bolt thiefs'

The slip clutch is mounted on the implement. The female side of the telescoping PTO shaft is mounted to it. I always adjust mine a good bit more than tight enuf to stall the tractor. Otherwise they burn up quite readily. A real problem if tractor/implement is a serious overmatch.

Slip clutches are good insurance and peace of mind like mentioned... once you have one set where you like, cut yourself a spacer/feeler gauge out of plastic or metal & that'll save you a bit of time determining where your spacing should be each time you slip it.

Like spider mentioned, be sure the clutch is on the implement side of the driveline--don't know exactly why, but every manufacturer that makes a recommendation makes that one (added weight/wobble/inertia on the shaft?).

Oh, sure, now you tell me But if I mount it on the tractor then I can use it on all of my PTO-driven devices. Like my cutter and, um, those other thingies that I might get some day. And why didn't the clutch come with this little tidbit of advice? (It came with 0 documentation!) Sigh...

Aparently "real" farmers are born with implement instinct and don't need to be told. Must be like a baby croc stalking bugs minutes after hatching. Farmer babies can crawl over to a 15' bat wing and hook it up and start mowing before they can walk. It's just us newbies that need instructions!

Does the metal gauge measure the spring height? That might be a good idea. I keep snugging the nuts up until slippage goes away during regular operations. Then check for unnecessary slippage by feel for heat on the clutch. That bugger gets hot if too loose.

It takes more than a couple of minutes to do the maintenance. There must be 8 bolts with nuts that must be loosened using two wrenches, then slip it, and then tighten up in increments until the slip stops.

Mine is frozen up rigth now in need of a good slipping. Stored outside.

Make marks on the two halves of the clutch so that you can verify that the clutch isn't locked solid. They should be in different positions after a hit.

My motto is "when all else fails, read the instructions". I usually lose the instructions early on, and figure this stuff out without them.
