I never use the TDC method. Just turn over the engine and watch the pushrod (on the valve you want to set/check)start going down. You will see at the very bottom of its stroke it will stop moving for a brief second before it starts going back up. You want to stop when the pushrod is in that stopped, bottom position. Set the clearance & move to the next one.
