We picked up a spyware program, Wndows SyncroAd. Norton alerts me of the spyware and tells me how to remove it, but when I go to add/remove program, it tells me to look in Win Comm or Windows Adcontrol orWindows AdTools, these programs are not in the list. Anyone have any suggestions of how to get rid of this invasive program. Thanks!

Just recently I came across a recommendation that one tries locating and deleting the files at the Command level, what used to be called the DOS level. Under Windows XP, you click on start, all programs, accessories, and command-prompt. It does require you to know how to navigate at the DOS level, which maybe only white-haired old ferts like me still know how to do. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

But, if you know how to get around at that level, give it a try. I just used that method to get rid of a couple of files that Norton kept finding but couldn't delete. If you're not confident, try to find an antique person who played with micro computers in the '80s.

Hey who you calling antiquated? And I am not white haired, it all fell out......

Remember when "dos" commands were all that? I had a fellow at a contract work once just could not get over this new language he learned in about 10 minutes............Windows scriptiing............told him it was also "dos" commands, he asked what that was.

And you are right, when all the fancy shmancy windows stuff fails, go to dos and do it.

I would suggest trying the Security Tango before editing Registry values. It has the added benefit of removing any other malware you don't even know is there as well. Plus, manually deleting Registry Keys is pretty dicey. You can get in a heap of trouble if you make a wrong move. ALWAYS set a new restore point and make Registry Backups before editing your Registry! If the Tango fails to work, for instructions on removing SyncroAd manually, see http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/pf/adware.syncroad.html. Good luck!

Hey - I may be white haired but I refuse to admit that I am old. I still have a couple of DOS and CPM machines operable.

I am now running the new Beta version of Microsoft Anti Spyware and have found that it has eliminated about 98% of the spyware infections that I used to get. Now, when I run Pest Patrol, Adaware, or Spybot, only Pest Patrol finds an occasional problem. I also gave Security Tango a try this evening and it found nothing on my computer. My biggest problem is getting rid of programs that I no longer have any use for. Seems that some of them just aren't found when you go to the Control Panel Add/Remove Utility. I had a heck of a time getting rid of my trial copy of Spyware Nuker 2004. It wouldn't even allow me to delete the file. I finally tricked it by opening in Safe Mode and deleted the files. Then when I rebooted, it was gone, however Windows did a Scandisk and had to do some repairs. Guess everything is OK now, since I am here to type this... Junk...... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
