I have a #40 chain that I am assembling and this is the masterlink I received. I am wondering the proper way to bend that little wire? I don't want to have problems in the future. I have never seen this type. Thanks!

From the single view you have not sure how you bend it. But based upon the single view does not the other pin come into the top part also? If so does it have a hole for the clip to run through?
That is an offset link also known as a half link. A master link or connector link would have straight side straps.
To answer your question, bend the wire in an S shape with both ends as close to the side strap as possible.
