We have looked at many options and are down to two final options.

(option 1)
Part I of the project are the two ponds. We have interviewed, seen photo albums and seen completed work of a Company that does ponds only. They want a lot of money to do a 1/4 acre pond at 9 feet deep & another pond slightly less than 1/4 acre and approx 6-8 feet deep. We are guessing they will do a 1:5 slope (one foot for each five). We are guessing they might cut a corner or two on the size. Based on the many times we've talked it appears they won't be very cooperative to any last minute adjustments. But they say they will place the dirt wherever we want it - we are going to use 98% of it for a dirt bike track - we are not sure how that will turn out. BUT all they do is ponds so we are guessing the ponds will probably hold... lots of guessing as you can see. AFTER the two ponds are done we have a company that builds dirt bike tracks. Part II is the building of the dirt bike track - part II of the project will cost money too.

(option 2)
The Company that builds dirt bike tracks can do both projects. Dig both ponds and also do the dirt bike track. They are not experts at ponds but using them for both projects can save us a lot of money. They will be very cooperative about last minute adjustments. And the other reason I am leaning towards them is because in essence - the dirt bike track will be nearly free.

We believe the soil is 100% clay. There are ponds in a in nearby subdivisions and the company that did them claims they went almost 15 feet down and all they found was clay. I am guessing with 100% clay - it wouldn't take a rocket scientist to dig a pond that holds water? Does anyone agree/disagree?

Anyway (and sorry for wasting your time up til now) - How do I measure the outside edge of a 1/4 acre pond and or a 1/3 acre pond and or a 1/2 acre pond. I'd like to measure for a 1/3 or 1/2 pond before anyone comes out with equipment. Then I'd like to tell them the first XX amount of distance I want a 1:10 slope... or even 1:20... and then at the start of the actual 1/4 pond let it have the 1:5 slope... this way we got at least 1/4 acre plus the extra part... plus the track with the huge discount.... not sure if that makes sense.

And at what point would someone typically start the big decline... we want 9+ feet in depth... maybe some day we can have fish.

Any other input would be helpful. Basically we want lots and lots of dirt. Yes, it will be 800-900 truckloads... but the track is going to be huge like the ones you see on tv.

Thanx!!

If I understand the question correctly are you just trying to figure out how to shape it or are you looking for the math? To figure the area I'd start with a 1/4, 1/3, or 1/2 acre circle to get the rough size and adjust as necessary to make it look aesthetic. I forgot all the fancy math like "pie are square" so I always cheat.

Here are two handy calculators. The first will let you convert areas. It's a great free download with all kinds of useful tools:

Convert for Windows - joshmadison.com

Using it you'll see there are approx 1335 square meters in .33 acres.

This one shows you how to figure the radius of a circle given an area:

Circle Calculator

A .33 acre circle has a radius of approx 20.6 meters.

Take a stake and put it in the center of where you want your pond, tie a 20 meter string to it and walk around in a circle with a can of paint.

If you want to get fancier shapes, that second calculator shows the circumference of a 1/3 acre circle is approx 130 meters. I would think that you could take a string that is 130 meters long and arrange it in any shape you want (as long as the ends touch) to come up with a 1/3 acre oval, teardrop, etc.

Hopefully that is what you were looking for and I didn't explain the obvious (it usually isn't to me) or totally screw up the math.

we did the same here in SC..dug a retension pond and the dirt workz track...dont know about the water table where you are but we dug ours nearly 20' deep on one end..ours filled with water in 2-3 weeks...rectangle shape and only sloped the long end of the rectangle..we fenced the deep end in a u shape...i think you are going to need some loamy dirt with all that clay or you are going to have a really slick track that is a bone breaker when it gets dry..CRF250 rider here...good luck on your project...I would go with the tract builder digging the hole though...save the money...you will needit for a sprinkler system for the track...

Thank you and Thank you.

I'm on my smartphone now but I will go on to my computer in the morning and do a google search to find out the comparison of a meter with a yard or a foot.

I am very impressed dirt workz is a reputable company. The guy doing our track (Vernon McKiddie) is a professional racer. He is gonna do our track after he gets back from spectating at Anaheim 1. Any chance you could put up a picture or two of your pond and or of your track. Tomorrow I will scan google earth of what we have and of what we're thinking of doing. Of course the track builder and his crew are probably going to ignore some of our design and build what he likes. My boys race KTM's and I race my Honda. We used to get lessons from retired Jeff Dement and Larry Hughes. We took a short break but are coming back with a new attitude. We do Houston Supercoss and Freestone Outdoor National every year. We have autographs from everyone imaginable. Pics. Need pics. Thanx!! ;-)

If I understand your pond plan you want the ground to gradually slope to your desired depth. Your problem will be that along the shore the water will not be deep enough to block the sun and pond weeds will take over. It is more common to do an abrupt drop of several feet as a vegetation control measure. Take a look at the Pond Boss forum for design ideas. Pond Boss Magazine: Welcome These guys are crazy about ponds the way we are crazy about tractors.

I have a friend that had an existing pond on the property when he took over the land. The pond was at the head waters of a small creek. In the summer the creek was only a damp patch . In the Canadian spring with the melting snow the flow was almost over the banks.
When he applied to the goverment for a permit to correct the pond that was a dam in the middle of the creek he was told no.
The pond had to be dug deeper because it had silted up. The inlet to the pond was blocked from the creek. The outlet was damed up with a cold water overflow pipe to back feed the pond.
I offered the contract to another friend who ran a very proper excavation company. The problem was he needed a long reach excavator which meant he had to rent one.
This meant a slim to Zero profit.
So the contract went to another company. They did the work.

The problem was the grading around the pond looked like a WAR ZONE.
I helped the 75 year old owner rototill the land back so we could plant grass seed.
