I have an HLA2000 snow plow. It turns side to side too fast, so I installed to flow controls on the input side of the crossover relief valve. It did the trick last winter, but it seemed that many times, if there was no load on the plow (like level), that it would continue full stroke to one side or another, even after letting go of the valve. Not sure what's up with that, but wondering if I should have plumbed the flow controls so they "meter out" rather than "meter in"; that is that full flow across the ball check would happen on the pressure side, with flow control out of the other port of the cylinder. Anyone ever done this before?

I used car brake hoses on my front mounted truck plow to slow down the angle action. However, it's still fast enough to "sweep" the snow to one side as necessary.

If you are using flow control valves, IMO, they work best on the exhaust side.

When on the inlet side, you limit flow in, weight of the load can still move the actuator ahead of oil flow....which can be a bad thing called cavitation......

When on the exhaust side, the flow control creates a back pressure that better limits speed. The load has to overcome the back pressure as it moves.

What valve are you using? Could it be sticking? I'm not sure how a float restrictor would allow the blade to continue moving after the valve was released.

Yes it is best to use flow control on outlet side.

Is this a single DA cylinder? Pair of DA cylinders? Or a pair of SA cylinders

You can buy orifice fittings for hydraulic components as you will see in this Parker link.

Orifice fittings can be bought in different sizes to limit flow to a specified amount.
http://www.parker.com/literature/Tube Fittings Division/orificefittings.pdf

In basic terms, it is a blank plate inside a fitting with a small hole or orifice to limit the flow.

Recently one guy with a wood splitter he was modifying ended up with just such a fitting at a TSC store. He went nuts until it was suggested he look inside each fitting he had added to his splitter

They are easily installed in an existing system. If you buy one with a small hole or orifice, you can then drill it out in steps to get the restriction you want.

Thanks for all the input. I think I'll try the flows metering out first. Because the extend and retract will go at different speeds if I use the same size orifices (which I'd have to buy), I can fine tune both directions much more easily with the controls.

Still didn't answer what type of cylinder it has.
Since you say it will go differing speeds if same orifice is used, I'll assume it's a single DA cylinder.
What is the brand/model? Did it come with the crossover or did you add?
When you say it sometimes will full stroke even once you have let off, is that just one direction or both? If only one direction, is that extending or retracting?

Sorry; Single DA; Not sure what brand, but it's all OEM from HLA, including cylinder, crossover. Yes the travel happens in both directions, and thinking about it now, it's consistent with cavitation. If I "bucket back" the plow so that it's up in the air, and tilt the tractor so that there is more weight on the side I'm pushing, it will stop when I release the valve. If it's in the other direction, it continues to travel on it's own. I think this is consistent with the cavitation idea.

The crossover on a DA cylinder will only work one direction. That's when the cylinder is extending.

And even then, the oil that is "crossing over" isn't enough to fill the void created by the cylinder extending. So you are introducing air into the system. Could be your problem..
