kubota rtv900: kubota mx5200
I have had my rtv 900 insured on a commercial policy for awhile now, (used in my small side business). my insurance company says I have to have it on a commercial "auto" policy and it can't be on a commercial inland marine. it is starting to get too expensive for my liking at just under $600 per year for 100 300 thousand coverage. my tractor, which is valued more, is only $189 per year on a comm inland marine policy. I asked if the rtv could go on the inland marine policy and my insurance company says no, the rtv is a vehicle, not a piece of equipment. how do you have your side by sides insured if not on your home owners?

another quick question. also a log grapple trailer. my insurance company says that too has to be on the auto policy. but it is an off road trailer, kinda like a farm implement, so I also thought that could go on an inland marine type policy, but again I am told it has to be on the auto policy. does this sound right or does my insurance company just not understand equipment use too good. (I do transport the log trailer on my landscape trailer from site to site, not directly towed behind the truck.) the comm auto is far more expensive then inland marine. is there another type of insurance I could get for these pieces of equip? thanks again as I am not knowlegable about insurances.:confused2:

Our RTV is covered on our farm policy. It is only covered for loss, liability is covered as part of our general liability coverage on the farm policy.

What are you insuring the log trailer for, liability, or loss?

Of course, insurance procedures vary from state to state.

Does Kubota provide liability insurance? His mentioning 100K 300K sounds like he has liability coverage. I think Kubota only provides insurance on damage to the item, or loss due to theft.

Ah, I think you are correct. No, to my knowledge they don't provide liability. But, this still could be an option to lower his total insurance package by utilizing KTAC and ? (Liability only or an umbrella).

Depending on were you live each state has different insurance rules as does each insurance company.
I have most rtv's insured on auto/motorcycle policies for $150 - $250 per year unless you are a farmer which you said you use it in business so a farm policy would not cover it.
The trailer if it is/can be registered for road use weather you pull on road or not would need to be on a commercial vehicle policy to be insured
Your best bet is to find a good insurance agent that will explain why how to cover it and why you need to insure it a certain way.

thanks for the replys. I forgot about Kubota having their own insurance for the rtv. I will check into that. thing is, I do drive it on public roads at times.

as for the log grapple trailer, I will have to ask more about before I understand the best way to insure it. I don't have it licensed. I just use itt behind the tractors off raod. I transport it from site to site on my landscape trailer, so....

I heard a story once from someone that every possible type of trailer needs to be licensed, insured, ond so on. I asked even the little tow behind wood splitters, and they told me, technically "yes" you need a license plate and the whole works to be fully legal on the road even for a little wood splitter. go figure.

I think you are right about PA. Each state has its own laws about what does and does not require registration and a plate. Here is NY state types of things that can be towed that don't require a plate per NYSDMV.

It was stated before that every state does things differently. In Ohio you do not need plates for a towable log splitter. The same rule applies to mortar mixers, and air compressors. Even with the state and counties looking for every bit of income they leave this stuff plate free. If in doubt call the law.
