How do you set points & timing on a Stihl O31AV

Remember when saws had points and condensors? I've got one from just before electronic ignitions became standard. It's about 22 years old and in good condition except for the ignition.

Does anybody know how to set the points & timing? There isn't really a timing adjustment, it's just that the points can shift a little forward or backward relative to the points lobe. Any tips or suggestions would be a great help!

Go to the Stihl web site and see if the manual for your saw is still available. Maybe that'll help.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong but here's what I know about those engines.

The timing is set and usually can't be changed. It can, however, get out of time if the flywheel key becomes partially sheared or the points bracket gets bent.

The gap is set using one of the holddown screws or a cammed screw head. I usually adjust them about .030", or until the engine sounds right. Sorry I don't know the exact setting fot that model, maybe someone else does.

Okay monkey here you go, points on that model are set at .015 to .017, that will get you very close for good perfomance, if you are replacing the points first step is pulling the flywheel, and you need a good puller cause the flywheel pulls off very hard, the best way set is if you have access to a dial indicator to put in the spark plug hole. And set the points at 3 to 4 degrees BTDC, that's when the points first start to open. That's the right way to do it, but adjusting them though the flywheel hole will work good to.
