Myself, I recently discovered shortwave listening and what a revelation that has been. Radio Netherlands, Amsterdam Forum has become a favorite and I regularly listen to the BBC, Radio Sweden, Prague and Russia. To a much lesser extent I also tune China Radio International and Radio Habana. Obviously for some broadcasts one has to have the BS filter on. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif Still, I very much like to have a broader view on world and cultural events then what I might have otherwise. Good stuff.

As I spend quite a bit of time in my car, for hours every work day, I'm also an avid NPR listener. When there is something on my local PBS station I dislike, like Piano Jazz or Sound and Spirit, I turn the iPod on and listen to podcasts from Deutsche Welle. They have a nice weekly one hour program Inside Europe and a daily news program called Newslink Plus.

As you might imagine I've little time left for the television. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Good ol' "head in the sand" me.... I much prefer LOCAL news to national or international news. That's not to say I don't stay current on world news, I do. I just don't spend a lot of time with it. Newspapers, SOME TV news, a little radio (different stations almost daily. I spend around 2-1/2 hours a day behind the windshield, traveling to and from work. Good "radio time") I actually prefer AM radio stations for their news. (That may be a product of our local radio stations and the absence of a good FM news station) I also get some information via internet.

But my favorite time of the day is when I get home, kick back in the Lazy Boy in front of the fireplace, and read my "Pioneer News", the local gossip paper. Usually around 20 pages counting classifieds, it's chalk full of arrest reports for the county, who's doing who and for what reason, and all the reposession notices. (You'd be astounded at how many per week there are)

I guess that I'm still living in the day when we had a "party line" telephone. Then it was easy to stay up on the latest gossip. All I had to do was pick up the phone and listen to Mrs. Goff, our neighbor, and she'd be raving and ranting about all the neighborhood goings on.

Hello Ernie,
Here is a link that lists most all English broadcasts. As you are on the left coast the European broadcasts may be a bit tougher to log while the Australasian broadcasts should be easier. (Radio Australia, Radio Japan, and Radio New Zealand for example) If you’re in a wood frame house you should be in pretty good shape right off your S700’s whip, but if you’re in concrete or steel framed house you may need an outside antenna. Being in a rural location also helps as there isn’t as much electrical interference to deal with. Lastly one has to be patient with the shortwave; due to atmospheric conditions what you are able to tune tonight you may not be able to tune tomorrow. Hope this helps. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
