Wow! I have seen that happen in extreme cold when I left some sodas in my snowmobile overnight but it hit -40F that night. Never seen it due to heat. Impressive!
That sucks. Just thinking of wiping that sticky, syrup off of everything is just too much. I hate cleaning up soda of any kind, but Coke is the worse. It just sticks to everything, and even after cleaning it up, you'll find sticky spots.
I think they are making soda aluminum cans thinner and thinner to squeeze every penny they can get. A few weeks back, my MIL twisted her ankle and was not able to walk. My wife went to take care of her for a couple of days. I drove her to her mother's house and we both took cans of soda for the trip. My wife didn't even open her soda and it was left in the cup holder. We were at her parents house for about 1 hour with the car parked in 100+ degrees, and then I left to drive home. I went to move the full soda can to another cup holder, but it slipped out of my hand and dropped about 2 inches back into the cup holder. POOF! It instantly exploded. The whole side of the can ripped out. Luckily, it was a deep cup holder and 90% of the soda stayed there. I only had to clean up 10% of it spread all over the front seats, dashboard, and windshield.
I can surely identify with your picture, Cat Driver. How much soda stayed inside the can since only the top popped?
