How many had to cut tiller PTO shaft?

I'm picking up a new Landpride RTR0550 this Saturday for my new JD2320----anyone out there with this combo? Did you have to cut the PTO shaft?

How about those with a similar tiller? Any shaft cutting for you?

When I got my RFM, I had to cut the "standard length" shaft provided.

10 minute job with a saws all and proper blade.

I think it is best looked at on an individual basis rather than what fits on other peoples tractors. If you use IMatch or other quick couplers these have to be considered too.

What I do is raise the new implements up so that the pto shaft is inline between the tractor stub shaft and the implements gear box. I make the pto shaft short enough to just clear the stub shaft. When you slide over the stub shaft you will gain an extra couple of inches. Follow up by raising and lowering the implement and marking the shaft at its longest extension. Then check to see if you have enough overlap on the two sections.

Remember to shorten both sides of the shaft equal amounts when cutting the pto shaft down.

What is your reasoning for cutting both shafts off? Length of shafts will not affect angle of u-joints. Cutting both off on the late model(foreign to USA) drive shafts isn't difficult. Cutting off female end on the older square/rectangular drive shaft is another thing

Rather curious about the cutting of both ends myself? I don't believe my shaft is centered between the imp and tractor either. It still seems to work fine, although now it is on the stages of not enough overlap since I extended the mounts on the tiller.I made the Mounts longer as the tiller wasn't clearing items well behind me at full lift..

The reason you are cutting the shaft would be because it is too long and male and female is butting at both ends. If you only cut the female part then the male is still to long and will butt at the end and vise versa. Anyone correct me if I'm wrong.

Jim, note the OP is buying a new Landpride tiller not an older square drive pto shaft model. My reasoning was having the inner tube bottom out in the socket. You could leave the inner tube longer if you made sure that there is enough clearance when fully retracted. This being an internet forum though I would rather save a noobie some grief, have them trim both sides to alleviate this issue.

I am getting the impression the OP has never cut a shaft before.??

I was nervous about cutting the shaft for my 3pt. snowblower. Now that I understand the process, it is really a piece of cake.

Like a carpenter, measure twice, cut once.

I cut mine while the blower was on the back of the tractor with the shaft connected to the blower and the other half of the shaft connected to the tractor at the pto shaft. Be sure to cut the shaft at an equal distance from both ends to eliminate any jamming.
