I just read as part of a Facebook post that in 2017 Michigan drivers are going to be paying an ADDITIONAL TWENTY PERCENT on their currently obscene vehicle registration fees. Get this: I am now paying $160 a year for a registration fee for a SEVENTEEN YEAR OLD Y2K GMC 3/4 ton that I drive maybe 1500 miles a year. I now pay $90 a year for registration fees on a 2004 Saturn that gets driven maybe 3000 miles a year. I find such increases to be an obscene farce...can anyone tell me if the state you live in charges such an obscene fee for registration? My feelings are this: Registration fees should be based on the weight of the vehicle and more importantly: THE NUMBER OF MILES IT IS DRIVEN A YEAR. Why should I have to subsidize the people who put 60,000 miles a year on a 6,000 pound truck...? WHAT A FARCE !!! Just saying here: I hate the way the government here (bleeps over) the seniors and we are planning to move quite soon.

best thing to do....vote with your feet.

Here in Tennessee, tags run about 20 bucks/yr. That's it.

My BIGGEST pet peeve is Massachusetts registration fees. We have 4 cars and a motorcycle registered. The F450 is about 375.00 per year for the plate. The others are 100.00 per year. BUT.. we also pay excise tax on the vehicles every year, so that adds up to another 3500.00 +\- a year that I get to give to the state ... friggin hate it.

About $60 here in Washington State for typical vehicles.

Washington used to have really obscene fees, based on vehicle value (that they determined), then voters voted in $20 registration fees, something was wrong, so legislature passed $20 fees, but then come the weight fees, processing fees and anything else they can throw on. We drive full size rigs and since they weigh more, our annual tags are around $75. They are talking about adding a tax on miles driven also to make up for revenue lost with vehicles getting better mileage along with the electric cars. We already have one of highest gas taxes.

The problem is that they spend all the budget on wages and benefits (I should have and may still get a state job for the pension and medical benefits). They don't have money left to fund the projects like road maintenance and building new infrastructure where needed. Another case where bad financial behavior is rewarded. If you don't use your budget and ask for more, you get a cut the next year.

We might need to clarify a tax issue first.

In Missouri I pay my personal property tax on my vehicles to the County directly.

In Missouri when I buy a license plate all I pay is the plate fee to the State. Makes my license plate cost seem cheap.

So for those that have posted their costs, does that include Personal Property tax on that vehicle or do you pay it additionally???

I pay 60.00 a year per plate. A little more for a P/U. Trailer plates are stupid here. No property tax on autos.

6.5%state sales tax.

Here in Tennessee, tags on personal vehicles/light trucks run about 20 bucks/yr. That's it.

There is no personal property tax.

There is no income tax.

We DO have a high sales tax, 9.5% on most items, lower on food....don't want to pay that, reduce your spending and produce more of your own needs.

Our plate fees go to the state.. excise tax. "Property tax" is paid to the town every year.

As Hawkeye said, for awhile we used to have to also pay a vehicle value tax but now just fees. We don't have a personal property tax in Wa St. other that real estate. Nor do we have a state income tax. We do have a state sales tax about 9%+ depending on local county/city taxes.
