I just had a contractor put a new 1100 ft by 12 ft wide driveway in for me. I had a contract that called for removal of 5-6 inches of top soil, lay down 12.5 ft wide drivway fabric, then top with 5-6 inches of modified, some call it crusher run or quarry run. I am not at the site, but was called by the contractor to say the job was finished. I will be going to the property next weekend, when he will want final payment. By that time, the driveway will have been rained and even snowed on several times. The contractor does not have the equipment to roll or otherwise compact the modified (except by driving on it). Other then the contractor, no one has driven on the driveway. My question is: if I dig small holes down through the modified to the fabric, how much settling should have occured to the modified and what depth should I be expecting? Should I still expect the 5-6 inches specified in the contract?

15% is a good average, but if they ran over it with tracked equipment and trucks, it should have mostly settled out.

More than likely, if the contractor did not have rollers or other compaction equipment the settling should be minimal (5%) or so in the center of the driveway. More compaction out on the areas where the vehicle tires and tracks would run. I agree with atgreen, 15% or so.

Good idea to put the geotextile down.

We did crusher run last year but had a base of railroad ballast. Worked very well except in the lowest area of the driveway where it sank out of site in the clay. This year we put down geotextile cloth and went with 3 inch crushed concrete with a layer of crushed asphalt over it. Hoping when it gets wet and sloppy next spring that we have fixed the problem.

I agree. Without adequate compaction you can expect the ruts to show up pretty quickly.

My driveway is 20'x330' with 6" of road base (crusher run) installed in three 2" lifts, watered and rolled with a vibrating roller (one of those riding type) between lifts. After nearly 4 years some low spots are starting to appear despite the professional installation job.
