How much has steel price increased tractor prices

Hello all - I stumbled upon this great forum a few weeks ago - and have been reading it like the newspaper (more interesting than the paper !) I am new to tractors - so I am learning a lot here - but I am wondering - has the increase in the price of steel significantly increased the price of our tractors over the normal year-year increases? Lets say for example - has the price over last years TC33 or TC40 increased more this year than in a normal year where steel prices haven't been as dramatic ?

New Holland is charging a 3% surcharge on all invoices for steel.

I wouldn't expect the higher steel cost to be a big factor in the total cost of building the tractor. Most of the cost is labor and machining, etc. with little of the total in steel materials. But, anything is a good excuse to raise the price. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif Example is an increase in orange juice immediately after a freeze in FL.

If the price of a barrel of crude oil keeps going up, manufacturer's may have to charge an energy surcharge. After all, airlines already do it. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

The company I work for imports & manufactures wire & wire mesh.. the surcharge is currently over %14 on plain steel mesh & wire orders.

Construction attachment companies are getting pounded! We see 15% or so from many of them. Pricing changes almost daily.

my 12 ga woven fence wire went from $78.00 a roll to $129.00. I would assume alot of the increase steel prices are based on what the traffic will bear. No way could someone justify 50+ percent increase on such thin strands of metal. When no one buys and the warehouse is full there will be the big sale at 100 per roll and everyone will think it some type of great bargain. I think they condition buyers !!!

I'm in the steel wire business. We make spring wire, not fence wire, but the processing is very similar. Our raw material price (steel rod, almost identical to what the fence wire folks use) doubled over about an 8 months period. In some cases, our raw material is costing more than what we used to sell our finished product for just one year ago. Steel rod is a big percentage of the final cost of wire manufacturing. I can easily believe they had to raise their prices that much just to cover raw material increases.

What is driving the increase in these prices is the price of scrap steel (the prime ingredient in "new" steel). The Chinese are buying it all up and driving the prices through the roof, causing high prices and shortages in the US.
