is too much?

Kubota L5030HSTC, new and in-service as of Mar 06.

Fifty hour service on-time, OEM filters and Chevron Synthetic ALL-Weather THF for the HST; Chevron Delo for the engine.

Just performed the 200 hour service; OEM filters all around, and Mobil Synthetic Turbo diesel Truck for the engine.

I examined the magnet on the discarded low pressure hydraulic filter and found a deposit of metal "powder" as well as larger sized particles (grains of sand size). The total amount would fill this area ( ).

Is this acceptable or is it accelerated wear?

Probably normal. Did you check the return line screen? Shavings there are a "bad" thing. What you are talking about could still be manufacturing debris.

I am unfamiliar with a "return line screen" on my 5030. It has 2 filters for the HST, a suction (low pressure) and the "HST" filter (high pressure).

Is there a screen on this model, and if so, where is it located?

That small amount is acceptable. I just finished the 300 hour service on my NH 1720 and saw no visible metal filings but it is a gear drive with shuttle shift. I don't think that you have any undue reason to worry. Enjoy that fine machine!!!

It sounds normal from what I've seen and heard. When I serviced mine at the 200 hour service I had what you are describing and a large spiraled shaving a couple of inches long in the suction screen. It scared me to death but when I checked around I was told not to worry. It's got 500 hrs on it now and has never had a problem.

It should be there. Here is a picture from a Kubota parts book to help you locate it.
This is for an L3410, but your's should be the same. You are scheduled to check and clean this at 50 hrs, 200 hrs and every 200 after that.

Thank you for the replies. Some of you have mentioned a "screen". Since the 5030 has 2 filters, does it also possess a screen in the hydro system?

In the picture I posted, the long thing that goes into the tube, left side of the picture is the screen. You have to take the bolt out to get to the screen.

Sorry that the numbers didn't copy, but that's the limit of my skills.

This information should be in your owners manual.

John, thanks for all the effort.

Try as I might, I cannot find any assembly on my tractor that looks remotely like your illustration. I have the 5030 parts manual, and there is not even a part listed as a screen or screen filter. I think that maybe the 5030 (and maybe even the 30 series) uses dual cartridge type filters (inlet and outlet) instead of a screen.

Thanks again.

Most screens I have seen are located in the differential housing with a banjo connection and o ring on the suction side (low pressure) to the hyd pump inlet. On my ford 1700 looks like the following pics.

Rear Differential and screen housing.

Dirty screen.

Clean screen by washing and scrubbing it in diesel fuel and using an old tooth brush:
