I have a chain drive tiller, a Befco that I have owned for over 20 years. The only maintenance has been to keep it lubed, oil level in the gear box and replace the shear pins (probably close to a hundred in the years). The tiller has never had the chain replaced nor any other major repairs. So I would not be afraid to buy another chain drive tiller.

When we grew potatoes we ran several howard and krone rotavators (One chain and one gear) personally i found no real preference or difference . For sizing we always found 1hp per 1 inch of tiller seemed right to work at a reasonable depth , We ran 80 inch on 80hp , 100 inch on 100hp and 120 inch on 120hp give or take a few hp .

60" tiller on my 32hp L3200 HST meant often going pretty slow, but it did the job pretty well. The HST made it easy to push it as hard as the HP would let me and keep up with varying soil difficulty.

I use tillers really hard and beyond what most here would do. I have tilled rock driveways and moved them, tilled under standing sweet corn, chopped up clay culverts and everything in between. You can't do this with an entry line tiller but if you spend up to better quality I have noticed no difference between chain and gear drive. That wasn't always my opinion but I have yet to damage a quality chain drive tiller. In my mind I still think gear should be better but in practical application it hasn't worked that way. I wonder if the chain absorbs some of the shock load?

As to width and horsepower, see what the manufacturer suggests and do not overpower the tiller. Better to have not quite enough HP than too much is my view. The tillers I have seen damaged were from higher than suggested HP applications. My current Maschio six ft tiller is suggested--I think-- as 45 to 65 HP and I use with a Kubota MX5100 or L4300 and 51 or 43 HP. Some of the HP suggestions are subjective but I never overpower. :)

I am running the tarter 6' tiller on my kubota l4330 and it handles it great. It weighs in at around 720lbs according to the website Rotary Tiller - Tarter Farm & Ranch. Put about 15 hours on it this weekend with great results.

I totally agree about not overpowering tillers or any other equipment for that matter. That is the quickest way to damage something.

I have a Terraforce YJR074 behind my Bobcat tractor. Works fine and meets your specifications exactly. It's made by Ansung and built like a tank. It has the weight you need to work. You may be even able to handle their 80" model. One question is what is your tire width? You want a tiller wide enough to cover.
