Has anyone run rear tire chains on their JD 50 series (5075). Particularly ones with the 16.9 - 28 tires. It seems there's about 2, maybe 3 tight, fingers width of room between the treads and the fender. Is this enough room for chains?

I would want to be able to pass my closed fist between the tire and any part of the fender both horizontally and vertically. How much you have depends both on the tire size and the position you have them mounted in.

Your tires are probably about an inch bigger in radius then mine but you should have plenty of clearance vertically but might need to move them out a position or two depending on how they delivered it to you.

Thought about taking fenders off for winter. But it looks like pto switch is mounted on left side. Need to check closer. Maybe they (or pto one) can be raised?

Yes 4.1 inch factory spacers and the tires are set at the widest setting (position 8). It is very stable in the woods on steep hillsides. The tires are 13.6 X 28 the standard for the 5045E, Yours will be both wider and a bit taller.

You need to determine what type of chains you want, then contact Tire Chains by TireChains.com and ask about clearance.
With 4-link ladder type chains on 41-14-20 turf tires (on a Deere 4400), they suggested a minimum of 2.5". I had to reverse my tires to attain that clearance.
Even if you go for spacers...well, no use buying a more expensive spacer then you need...

To be clear on the subject, I did not need the spacers for chain clearance. I just wanted the tractor to be as good in the woods as possible summer and winter and had it set up accordingly. They don't help on the vertical clearance on the outside edge of the fender anyway, it just happens that the fenders are tall enough to begin with. If our OP has any troble with a 50XX tractor it will probably be from the tires set dished in and running too close to the inside surface of the fender. A simple position switch should do if that is the case. In any event the chains should be installed snug enough so they don't spin out at road speed and clash with the fender edge or top. I once had a set of Canadian style big ring chains that would have the rings flying four inches above the top of the tire at road speed.
