Mowing How much to charge for custom mowing jobs?

$85 an hour is what I charge. I think is a fair rate. Also if your doing it for others you might want to consider getting some liability insurance.... You might say no way... All I can say is the benifits of being insured and never needing to use it FAR outweighs taking the risk of going without and wishing you had!:2cents:

Speaking of cleaning off the equipment periodically, there was a thread on here a few years back where someone's tractor lit on fire from the sunlight reflecting throught a headlight and lighting up the dried cuttings on the tractor.

.

Never heard of that before, not saying it can't happen....but generally the poor quality of standard tractor worklights & their refractors/lens have enough trouble casting a useable light beam,.let alone providing a focal point for displacing thermal energy......

I will definitely be looking into liability insurance.

Look on your local Craig's list or online, find a few people already doing bush hogging/ditch bank work and call them. Ask how much they charge per hour / per acre, how much for flat areas and how much for ditch banks?

IMO, this is a bad idea, because 99% of people who are mowing off of Craigslist are not actually covering their operating costs, are slowly (or quickly) losing money, and don't even know it. If you want to get in on their business model, be my guest. Bear in mind that you need to cover not just the cost of fuel, but your time, depreciation on your tractor, depreciation on the bat-wing (unless the neighbor is just giving it to you), and the cost of the inevitable (yes, inevitable) repair to your tractor and/or the bat-wing.

General liability for a mowing service shouldn't be too expensive. It gets more expensive if you are ground-engaging or excavating. Be careful when you're shopping that your agent categorizes you correctly. A "landscaping" business may be classed one way or another depending on what the agent thinks you're actually doing.
